A pewter and mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquered compartmental box and cover, Japan, 17th century The arrangement of motifs, the technique (pewter and mother-of-pearl) and the dating can be compared with: a letter box dated circa 1700 and described as being in the style of Ogata Korin is held at the Cleveland Museum, under inventory number 1972.165. A shelf (shodana) dated to the 17th century is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum, under inventory number H-4523, and is classified as an important national cultural asset. The arrangement of patterns, the technique (pewter and mother-of-pearl), and the date can be compared with: a letter box dated circa 1700 and described as in the manner of Ogata Korin is in the Cleveland Museum, accession number 1972.165.
