17th century Spanish school, Saint Nicaise, Saint Hugh of Malta, Blessed Gerland, three canvases, original canvas
27 x 32 CM - 10,6 x 12,6 IN.
Saint Nicaise, depicted in armour, refers to his life as a knight-martyr whose military courage nourished the heroic iconography typical of the Order's saints.
Saint Hugues de Malte is dressed in religious vestments, with his skullcap. He is holding the rosary and blessing the viewer.
Blessed Gerland holds a skull, a reminder of his meditation on death.
In Valletta, the co-cathedral of Saint John houses their representations in a décor designed by Mattia Preti. At the Order's Magistral Palace in Rome (Grand Magisterium), these three saints are depicted in the Grand Master's Chapel.
Our paintings are attributed to Wolfgang Heimbach.
