Our two panels are fragments of the flaps of a triptych of the Adoration of the Magi, the central panel of which has now disappeared. The original appearance can be determined by comparison with the similarly composed Nativity on the left panel of the triptych by Pieter Coeke d'Alost in the former Hester Diamond Collection in New York [1]. Two triptychs attributed to the workshop or entourage of Pieter Coecke d'Alost, featuring both the Nativity and the Flight into Egypt on the flaps, are known, one in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brussels [2], the other unlocated [3]. The refined realistic details and attractive colour palette for which the Flemish tradition is renowned are clearly present: the gilded brocades of the angels in the Nativity, the green dress of one of the two whose shadows are deepened by red glazes, the blue cloak of the Virgin adorned with a gilded border, the straw hat of Saint Joseph and the sense of the animals all bear witness to the mastery of execution and the high quality of these panels in the master's workshop.
