The drawing should be compared with the lithograph by Zéphirin Belliard based on a model painted for the second part of the commission of royalist leaders by Louis XVIII in 1821, which included portraits of Cadoudal, d'Elbée, de Frotté, Précy and Talmont (for more information, see collections-musees.cholet.fr). The first commission in 1816, entrusted in part to Girodet, included portraits of Bonchamps, Cathelineau, Charrette, Lescure, Pichegru, Moreau, La Rochejaquelin Henri and Louis, Suzannet.
Leader of the Breton Chouannerie, Georges Cadoudal (Brech 1771- Paris 1804) refused Napoleon's offers of pacification in 1800 and went into exile in London. He plotted an assassination attempt in 1803 with Pichegru and Moreau. Arrested on 9 March 1804, he was sentenced to death and executed on 25 June 1804.
