Commentary:
General Kléber accompanied Bonaparte to Egypt. He took part in the capture of Alexandria and continued the fighting in Syria at the battles of El-Arich and Mont-Thabor. On 2 July 1798, on his return to France, Bonaparte gave him full military powers. Despite his efforts to conclude an agreement with the British, he was forced to resume the fighting. Thanks to his command and good use of artillery, he defeated the Turks at Heliopolis and reconquered Upper Egypt. He was assassinated by a Kurdish student on 14 June 1800.
