French school of the 18th century Surrounding Jean-Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737) This folding screen consists of 4 carved walnut panels decorated on both sides, one side with 4 paintings on upholstered leather depicting foliage and poppy flowers and the other with 4 paintings on leather from the late 18th century depicting 3 portraits of men and one portrait of a woman against a background of architectural landscape. The portraits are known from the "Recueil de cent estampes représentant les diverses nations du Levant, tirées d'après nature en 1707 et 1708 par les ordres de M. de Ferriol, ambassadeur du Roy à la Porte: et gravées en 1712 et 1713 par les soins de Le Hay" based on the work of Jean-Baptiste Vanmour held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Département Estampes et photographie, (FOL-OD-11). 1. Portrait of the Wallachian Miss (plate 81) Based on prints taken from "Recueil de cent estampes représentant les diverses nations du Levant, tirées d'après nature en 1707 et 1708 par les ordres de M. de Ferriol, ambassadeur du Roy à la Porte: [estampe] / et gravées en 1712 et 1713 par les soins de Le Hay". The collection consists of prints illustrating, through portraits, the costumes of the court and the various classes of Turkey and other ethnic groups such as Greeks, Jews, Albanians, Hungarians, Persians, Armenians and Bulgarians in the 18th century. The prints were based on paintings by the painter Vanmour, who arrived in Constantinople with the entourage of the Marquis Charles de Ferriol, the French ambassador sent by Louis XIV to the Ottoman Empire from 1692 to 1711. The plates were engraved by nine engravers, including Claude Du Bosc, Charles Nicolas Cochin, Jacques de Franssières and Jean-Baptiste Scotin. The Metropolitan Museum in New York also holds numerous prints of the work by Gérard Jean Baptiste Scotin I (1671-1716) after Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, including three of the works presented here (Portrait de Aga, ou Gentilhomme Turc (inv. 2019.282.65); Portrait de Bey, Capitaine de Galere (inv. 2019.282.76); Portrait du Grand Visir, en Habit et en Turban de cérémonie (inv. 2019.282.96).
