Portrait of Louis II du Bouchet de Sourches (1711-1788), Marquis of Sourches, and his children, miniature on ivory, French School, ca. 1750-60, with 8 other miniatures in the same mount 0.86 x 0.75 in. Provenance: Marquis de Goulaine, Château de Goulaine ; Anonymous sale; Vendôme, Rouillac, 7 June 2009, no. 160 (sold for €19,000) ; Pierre Jourdan-Barry Collection (1926-2016); Then by descent; Private collection, Belgium The identification of the models is facilitated by the famous painting by Hubert-François Drouais dated 1756 (oil on canvas, Musée du Château de Versailles, MV 8106, fig. 1). At the centre of our montage is Louis II du Bouchet de Sourches (1711-1788), Marquis de Sourches. The three children depicted in the Drouais painting are the same here: Louis François has given up his flute and is wearing a red jacket, Yves Marie has given up his bagpipes and is wearing a green jacket, and Jeanne Madeleine Thérèse (1743-1765), the future Marquise de Vogüé, is on her father's right. Louis Emmanuel du Bouchet de Sourches (1742-1755), Marquis de Tourzel, was the eldest son of the Marquis de Sourches, but died young, a year before Drouais painted his great picture. We would readily identify him in the portrait of the young man in officer's uniform in the lower centre. Louis II du Bouchet de Sourches (1711-1788), Marquis of Sourches, Count of Montsoreau, Grand Provost of France and Lieutenant General of the King's armies had many children from two marriages. His first marriage in 1730 to Charlotte-Antoinette de Gontaut-Biron (1711-1740), daughter of the second Duke of Biron, produced four daughters. Widowed after ten years, the Marquis de Sourches remarried in 1741 to Marguerite Henriette Desmarets de Maillebois (1721-1783), daughter of Jean-Baptiste Desmarest, Marquis de Maillebois, Marshal of France. This union produced three sons and a daughter, as mentioned above.
