The King is depicted here wearing a red brocade suit with interlacing leaf motifs woven in silver in small vertical lines and the blue cordon of the Order of the Holy Spirit, a white collar and jabot, a short wig held in place by a black velvet bow, and a black tricorne under his left arm, in front of a wall decorated with pilasters.
This miniature was inspired by the pastel on vellum by Jean-Etienne Liotard of 1750, kept at the Château de Stupinigi, Turin (see Marcel Roethlisberger and Renée Loche, Liotard, Doornspijk, 2008, vol. I, pp. 389-391 and reproduced vol. II, figure 287).
