Lot no. 164
Russian school, 19th century "Mother of God of Vladimir". Icon representing the Virgin of Tenderness, one of the most famous Marian figures in the Russian Orthodox tradition, based on the Byzantine model. Tempera on wood with kovcheg, gold circles. Antique frame in carved and gilded wood decorated with vine branches and bunches of grapes, typical of the Russian taste for symbolic plant ornamentation. H. 31 x 26 cm. Please note: The "Mother of God of Vladimir" is one of Russia's most venerated icons, a symbol of protection and comfort, often invoked in times of trouble. The kovcheg (groove carved into the panel) is characteristic of early Orthodox production, intended to frame the sacred scene.
