Born in Dornbirn, he came from a household of craftsmen. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, devoted himself intensively to drawing from the 1920s onwards and developed an unmistakable style. From around 1930, Kalb became increasingly concerned with scientific and philosophical topics such as mathematics, psychology and space travel, which strongly influenced his artistic work. He lived a withdrawn life, had a critical spirit and came into conflict with the political systems of his time on several occasions. He was denied recognition during his lifetime. It was only posthumously that Kalb was recognised as one of the most independent artists of the interwar period. His work is now considered a forerunner of conceptual self-portrait art. In 2019, the Leopold Museum dedicated a comprehensive exhibition to him.
