Born into a wealthy family, Pingret trained with Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Baptiste Régnault, two neoclassical painters, then at the Saint-Luc Academy in Rome and exhibited at the Salon from 1810. Appointed professor of fine arts in his home town of Saint-Quentin, he was a travelling painter and, every summer, went to a different region to describe customs and costumes, from Switzerland to Italy or the Pyrenees and Mexico (between 1850 and 1855).
