Angeli studied painting and art education under Robin Christian Andersen at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1960 to 1965. In 1965, he moved to Istanbul, where he accepted a visiting professorship in painting at the State Academy in 1967. Angeli concentrated on historical paintings of Turkish history, drawing on literary sources, and remained largely non-representational in his paintings. He worked primarily on paper in synthetic resin, tempera, charcoal, graphite, and watercolour. Later, Angeli experimented with various techniques, choosing precise titles for his paintings and inserting elements into the picture field like backdrops. In 1971, he returned to Vienna with his wife, the painter Aylin Tektas, and their children. In the following years, he primarily created works in charcoal on paper and acrylic on canvas. From 1974, Angeli worked on monumental compositions; in the mid- to late 1970s, he explored materiality and the painterly treatment of surfaces. From 1980 onwards, the materiality of the pictorial objects gained in importance. Angeli distanced himself from bare pictorial spaces and devoted himself to the experience of nature. He created garden paintings, and the theme of "water" recurred repeatedly. From 1984 onwards, Angeli developed new geometric principles. Horizontal and vertical beams and poles became the supporting framework of the picture plane. The colour scheme became more restrained. In the 1990s and 2000s, he created his so-called "Nachtbilder" (night pictures) which depict the contrast between a limited light source and an overwhelming darkness. In early 2000, the artist worked on a series of so-called "Bühnen-Bilder" (stage pictures), spatial situations consisting of delicate rectangular constructions or stage-like foreground and background surfaces. Since 2001, Angeli has also lived near Venice. Eduard Angeli has exhibited at the Museum of the City of Vienna, the Museum of the 20th Century, the Rupertinum Salzburg, and abroad.
