Lot no. 1840
Eduard Grützner (1846 Großkarlowitz - 1925 Munich)
Return from the wine cellar
Extremely finely and nuancedly painted, excerpt-like composed snapshot of a Capuchin monk, who begins his ascent of the cellar stairs with a mischievous grin that announces his anticipation of the imminent enjoyment of wine. In his hands is an empty glass and the extinguished evening candle, while he carries a large, copper wine jug under his arm. A work painted with masterly characterisation and outstanding materiality and lighting by Grützner, who quickly achieved great success after studying at the academy under Hermann Anschütz and Carl v. Piloty from 1865 to 1870 and became one of the most important and still most popular Munich genre painters. One of Grützner's main subjects was cheerful, narrative scenes from monastic life, monks indulging in earthly pleasures in a sensual and lavish manner. Oil/mahogany panel (paint manufacturer Adrian Brugger, Munich). Signed and dated in upper right. (18)84. Handwritten no. 112 on verso. 36.8 cm x 29.5 cm. Frame.
