Eduard Hildebrandt (1818 Gdansk - 1869 Berlin)
Market Day in Bombay
Hildebrandt painted the motif of this view of India several times, but the present version stands out for its subtly emphasised, atmospheric mood and richness of detail. In 1862, Hildebrandt set off from Berlin on a two-year world tour that took him to Egypt, through the Red Sea to Yemen, on to Asia, India, Ceylon, Siam, Thailand, China, Japan and Manila, via San Francisco, Acapulco and Panama back to Europe. A friend and patron of Hildebrandt was Alexander von Humboldt, who persuaded King Friedrich Wilhelm IV to finance his first extended journey to North America and Brazil in 1844, which was to be followed by several more trips around the world. Chromolithograph a. watercolour/paper. Signed in the print on the right and lower left, location/title "Bombay". Approx. 23.5 cm x 33 cm (mat opening). Frame.
