Lot no. 45
EDUARD WIRALT (1898-1954) Estonian girl signed in ink 'Eduard Wiralt' (lower right) and dated '1942' (lower left) soft ground and dry point on wove paper sheet 54.5 x 43.7 cm. LITERATURE: Tallina Riiklik Art Museum. Ees6 NSV Kunst 1958: No 715 (ill. no 101). During the war in Estonia, Wiiralt mainly produced portraits, striving to express the national character of the people. He made many drawings of a young woman, Ada Sulling, but drew on these to create a more generalised image of the Estonian woman in his portraits "Estonian Girl" (1942, soft varnish) and "Estonian Girl" (1942, coloured aquatint). This is the image of a simple peasant woman, open and determined. The second version of this work, produced in Vienna (1944), uses a mixed technique of soft varnish and drypoint.
