EDUARD WIRALT (1898-1954) Head of a Man signed in ink 'E. Wiralt' (lower left), inscribed and dated '1937 drypoint on paper 30 x 44 cm The great Estonian engraver and draughtsman Eduard Wiiralt, who lived in Paris from 1925 to 1939 and from 1946 to 1954, produced two portraits in 1937 of the American painter Martin Baer (1894-1961), who studied graphic techniques under his guidance. Another portrait, depicting Mr Baer with a book, was also engraved directly onto the plate on 11 December 1937. "Portrait of a Man" is more general and much more expressive. The sketched style adds freshness to the image of a creative person. After Wiiralt's death, the engravings and drawings found in his studio were kept by the Estonian Committee in Stockholm, which donated most of them to the Estonian Art Museum in 2006 and sold others, marking each engraving on the reverse with the Estonian Committee's stamp.
