Edwaert Collier. (1640 Breda - 1708 London) Circumference Trompe-l'oeil painting with copper engraving of a thorn puller on a wooden wall The motif and style reflect the formative influence of Edwaert Collier, who, in addition to vanitas still lifes, also created a series of comparable trompe l'oeil paintings with engravings composed to great effect on wooden walls. Collier was admitted to the Haarlem guild in 1664, from 1667 he was active in Leiden, in 1686 he moved to Amsterdam and in 1693 to London. Oil on canvas; Ger. Gouge, collection no. mounted to lower margin; 65.5 cm x 56.5 cm. Provenance: From the collection of Maria Antonia Pessina de Branconi (1746 - 1793), mistress of Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand von Braunschweig (1735 - 1806), from 1781 in Langenstein Castle near Halberstadt; then in the collection of August Wilhelm Rimpau (1814 - 1892), Langenstein Castle near Halberstadt, inventoried in 1893 by the art historian Wilhelm von Bode (1845 - 1929), who was related to him; owned by the family at Langenstein Castle until 1945; later in various museum collections in the former GDR, including in Berlin, Dessau and Berlin.
