Several modules were produced for this commemorative medal for the centenary of the death of Mehemet Ali: large casts (c.115 mm) in zinc or bronze, as well as modules reduced to 59 mm, in bronze, silver or gold (our example). Mehemet Ali, born in Kavala (now Greece) in 1769, was commander of the Albanian troops sent to Egypt after Bonaparte's troops withdrew in 1801. He quickly established himself and became governor (Wali) under the Ottoman sultan Selim III. After having his Mamluk opponents assassinated at a dinner party in 1811, he imposed numerous reforms on Egypt: a conscript army, the development of railways and the Suez Canal project, the creation of modern schools and the cultivation of cotton. Although he came into conflict with the Sultan of Constantinople, he managed to hold on to power until 1848, and is considered to be the founder of modern Egypt.
