Wear and rubbing
The central decoration of this large tray has been entirely regilded, probably in the 19th century, on the model of a Mamluk tray from the period of Sultan al-Malik al-Nasir, circa 1330-1340. The titles are anonymous honorific titles in the name of a Mamluk officer of Sultan al-Malik al-Nasir. The frieze on the rim and the owner's mark seem to date from the Mamluk period, which suggests that the tray does indeed date from this period and was entirely polished and regreased later.
