EGYPTIAN BAS-RELIEF WITH DOUBLE CARTOUCHE OF AMENOPHIS IV / AKHENATON
13th Dynasty, Ca. 1353 - 1336 BC. A block of crystalline marble shaped as a double cartouche, enclosing inscriptions of the sun disc Aten: “Ra-Harakhty rising in the Horizon” and “in his name as the light which is in the Aten.” The sides bear the name of the king, linking the god Aten to his intermediary on earth. This block was originally part of a stairway railing in a temple dedicated to the god Aten. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 21.9.431. Size: 120mm x 120mm; Weight: 965g. Provenance: Private UK collection; acquired on the French market in the 1970s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
