EGYPTIAN WOODEN HEADREST WITH LOTUS BUDS. Middle Kingdom, Ca. 2055 - 1790 BC. A wooden headrest composed of a broad base supporting a tall shaft, surmounted by a concave neck rest. Two carved lotus buds project from the lower section of the shaft, just above the base. The front face of the shaft bears two vertical cursive inscriptions in black ink, reading: 'The favoured one before Anubis, Oupaï, justified.' Traces of red and black pigment remain on the surface. Size: 230mm x 150mm; Weight: 160g Provenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014; Ex. Jacques Billen (Guerlind Corporation), 21 November, 2009. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
