Elena Recco (attributed to) - Pair of still lifes with fish and shellfish Oil on canvas 49 x 61 cm Refined pair of still lifes depicting compositions of fish, crustaceans and catch arranged within a shady environment with seabed and cliffs. The works stand out for their evocative luministic construction, played out on deep chiaroscuro contrasts, and for the careful naturalistic rendering of the different fish species, characterised by brilliant silver reflections and a remarkable material quality. The canvases show clear affinities with the Neapolitan still life tradition that developed in the late 17th and early 18th century around the famous Recco family. In particular, the composition appears close to the figurative culture of Elena Recco, a rare female figure active in the field of still life painting and interpreter of a language characterised by strong naturalism and accentuated decorative taste. The theatrical arrangement of the fish, the dark Baroque atmosphere and the luministic rendering of the surfaces recall the tradition inaugurated by Giuseppe and Giacomo Recco, within which Elena developed a personal pictorial sensibility, appreciated in aristocratic Neapolitan and Roman collections.
