First French edition, translated from English by Gottfried Sellius and illustrated with a folding map and ten plates out of text engraved by J.-J. Flipart.
The work begins with a history of the attempts made since John Cabot to discover this famous passage, supposedly linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific through the ice of northern Canada. This is followed by a description of the coast, an abridged natural history of the country, descriptions of ice floes, the Inuit peoples (who were little known at the time), the effects of scurvy, and remarks on magnets, winds, climate, whales, etc.
