Lot no. 39
ELSKAMP Max. La Chanson de la rue Saint-Paul. Antwerp, Buschmann, 1922; small square in-8, brown jansenist morocco, ribbed spine, gilt edges on witnesses, cover, slipcase (Micheline de Bellefroid). This is an author's first edition of 110 copies. It is decorated with a green frame and black ornaments engraved on wood by the author. One of 10 copies on Chine, the only large paper. Bound at the head is an autograph letter from the author to the publisher Robert Sand, dated 18 October 1922, about the book (1 p. in-8). The latter had probably asked the poet for copies, but the latter refused: "This is too 'intimate' a book and I wrote it not for the public, but for those of my family and friends who knew my dearly departed. Only one hundred copies were printed, and Buschmann is only the printer and there is no publisher...". A perfect copy from the A. Grisay collection (ex-libris). - Some very rare spotting.
