Lot no. 85
EMIL RIZEK* (Vienna 1901 - 1988 Vienna) Bridge in Delft, around 1931 colour linocut/paper 26,2 x 33 cm signed Emil Rizek depicted in Emil Rizek 1995, Martin Suppan (Ed.) ESTIMATE °€ 30 - € 60 STARTING PRICE € 30 Emil Rizek was an Austrian artist. Instead of joining his father's business as an electrical engineer, as his family had wished, he took painting lessons from Anton Hlavacek. At the suggestion of Carl Fahringer, whom he met in 1923, Rizek undertook his first study trips. Among other places, he travelled to Indonesia, Japan, South Africa, and Hawaii. In America, he met his first wife, Dorothy Risdale Grove. He repeatedly returned to his native Austria, but initially, Emil Rizek found artistic recognition and the opportunity to present his paintings to a wider audience mainly abroad. After the Second World War, he received a permanent position, which finally provided him with the financial security he had long sought; his works were shown in numerous exhibitions. In 1960, a retrospective of Rizek's work was held at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. He was subsequently awarded the title of professor. In 1965, Rizek received the Grand Gold Medal of Honour from the Regional Association of Lower Austrian Art Societies. His favourite place of residence in the final years of his life was East Frisia. On Rizek's travels through Europe, he was particularly drawn to the Netherlands. Rizek described himself as a member of the "School of The Hague." This Dutch equivalent of French Impressionism, characterised by an emotional and intuitive style of painting, suited Emil Rizek's painterly approach. In The Hague, the vibrant tradition of the Old Masters was combined with the feeling for colour, form, and movement of the French Impressionists. In his selection of themes from the working-class and peasant milieu, the artist also follows the continuity of Dutch genre painting and French painters of the late 19th century: motifs from suburban life, the hustle and bustle of the streets, markets, and squares, in a modern European city or even in the Far East. Further artists and styles: Tempera, Gouache, Oil painting, Landscape PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographys 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
