The artist first explored this theme in 1859. This version is a second attempt, based on the plaster group Troglodytes Gorrila - du Gabon presented at the Salon in 1887, for which Fremiet received a medal of honour. Emmanuel Fremiet's interpretation of this subject was one of the sources of inspiration for the story of King Kong, which has been adapted many times for the cinema since the first version in 1933.
