Collection of 6 manuscript documents relating to the military and diplomatic careers of two key figures in the military history of the Empire: the Swiss general Antoine-Henri Jomini (1779-1869), a famous Napoleonic strategist who went on to serve Tsar Alexander I, and Marshal Nicolas-Charles Oudinot (1767-1847), Bonaparte's comrade-in-arms and a hero of the campaigns of the Revolution and the Empire. 1) JOMINI. Autograph letter signed, Paris, 19 March 1842, 1 p. folio, black ink, Paris secretariat stamp, addressed to the Minister of War. Jomini requests a copy of the Map of Russia in 26 sheets, just printed 2) JOMINI. Administrative document signed, 21 March 1799, 1 p. folio. Official decree of the Helvetic Republic, appointing a Bernese second lieutenant, signed by Jomini as adjutant to the Minister of War. 3) OUDINOT. Autograph letter (probably draft), s.d. [between 1806 and 1807], 2 pp. in-12. Document written by Oudinot while he was commanding the grenadiers of the vanguard between Jena and Tilsitt. In it he details orders for the battalion in question. 4) OUDINOT. Handwritten letter with autograph signature, 9 ventôse an VIII [28 February 1800], 1 p. in-4°. Addressed to General Lefebvre to ask him for a promise of armour from the Consul Bonaparte. 5) OUDINOT. Handwritten letter with autograph signature, 26 frimaire an VIII [17 déc. 1799], 1 p. in-folio. Recommendation by General Oudinot for the confirmation of rank of an officer who has shown bravery in Ireland and Zurich to the rank of brigade commander. Fairly good condition with some wear. Attached is another administrative correspondence signed by Oudinot, the ink of which has faded badly with a red wax stamp.
