Barely scratched with a needle on the right. The blank is slightly oblong, with good centring showing the entire altar on the reverse. Nice iridescent patina. A superb piece.
The reverse depicts the Ara Fortunae Reducis, the altar of Fortuna Redux "who watches over the safe return of those who have set out on a perilous journey". It was built to commemorate Augustus' return from his three-year tour of the eastern provinces on 12 October 19 BC, which was a public holiday with sacrifices.
