The son of Carus, who elevated him to the rank of Caesar, Carinus proved to be an able ruler in the West. With the help of his generals, he succeeded in repelling the Germanic tribes on the Rhine border. After the death of his father and brother Numerian, Carinus was defeated by Diocletian near the river Margus in Mesia, where he died, probably murdered by one of his soldiers.
