On the death of Probus, Carus, Prefect of the Praetorium from Narbonne, was proclaimed Emperor by the army. He immediately conferred the title of Caesar on his sons, Carinus and Numerian, then launched a series of victorious campaigns against the Quads and Sarmatians before turning his attention to the Persians. He advanced through Armenia into Sassanid territory and captured the Persian capital of Ctesiphon. In late July or early August 283, he died suddenly. According to the Augustan History, he was struck by lightning, but it is also likely that he was assassinated by Aper, prefect of the Praetorium, or by Diocletian, commander of the imperial guard. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot.
