ROMAN EMPIRE - NOVEL Clodius Albinus, Emperor (196-197). Denarius ND (196-197), Lyon. Av. IMP CAES D CLO - SEP ALB AVG. Upright head. Rv. FIDES LEG - ION COS II. Two joined hands holding a legionary eagle. RIC.20b; Silver - 2.89 g - 18 mm - 12 h NGC: coming soon. LEG-ION on reverse. Vigorous strike, slightly off-centre. Beautiful grey patina with bluish highlights. Superb at Fleur de coin. A Caesar associated with Septimius Severus' empire, Clodius Albinus became a public enemy in December 195. He was proclaimed Augustus by his troops in January 196 and landed in Gaul, where he settled in Lyon. The reversal of our denarius, for the loyalty of the legions, shows the civil war that was brewing. Beaten twice, Clodius Albinus committed suicide in February 197.
