In 83, Domitian went to Mainz and led an expedition against the Chattes [or Cattes, Weser-Eder region]. His victory over the Cattes, who surrendered unconditionally, led to the conquest of the Taunus Mountains and the Decumate Fields. Domitian took the title of Germanicus, which is mentioned extensively on his coins. The military districts on the left bank of the Rhine, which until then had been administratively allocated to the Gallic provinces, were transferred to the two Germanic provinces of Upper and Lower Germania.
