Lot no. 223
ROMAN EMPIRE - NOVEL Hadrian (117-138). Aureus ND (128), Rome. Av. HADRIANVS - AVGVSTVS P P. Nude head right. Rv. COS - III. Emperor on horse right, raising right hand. Calicó 1219 - RIC.348a ; Gold - 6,92 g - 20,5 mm - 6 h From an Ira & Larry Goldberg 55 sale, 29 October 2009, No. 165. UCS: coming soon. On a wide, perfectly struck flan, the flan barely pinched at 1 h on the right (5 h on the reverse). Only minimal traces of rubbing. The portrait is in high relief and very realistic. A golden patina covers both sides. Superb at Fleur de coin. In 128, Emperor Hadrian returned to Rome after visiting Africa during his travels through the Roman provinces. It is on this occasion that this aureus seems to have been struck, before the Emperor travelled again, this time to Athens, at the end of 128.
