Superb at Fleur de coin. Born in Caesarea, in the Roman province of Caesarian Mauretania, to an equestrian family of Berber origin, Macrin was the first emperor not to be of the senatorial class. He was proclaimed emperor of Rome on 11 April 217 while in the eastern provinces of the empire and was subsequently confirmed as such by the Senate. Throughout his reign, however, he never had the opportunity to return to Rome. Caracalla's policies had left Rome's coffers empty and the empire at war with several kingdoms, including Parthia, Armenia and Dacia. While Macrin's diplomatic actions brought peace with each of the individual kingdoms, the additional monetary costs and resulting tax reforms caused unrest in the Roman army. Caracalla's aunt, Julia Maesa, took advantage of the unrest and launched a rebellion to have her fourteen-year-old grandson, Elagabal, recognised as emperor. Macrin was overthrown at the Battle of Antioch on 8 June 218 and Elagabal proclaimed himself emperor with the support of the rebel Roman legions. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot.
