Nero (54-68). Sesterce mounted in medallion ND (67), Lyon.
Av. NERO CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P. Laureate bust right.
Rv. DECVRSIO / S - C. Nero galloping right, holding a spear, followed by a rider holding a standard.
RIC.cf. 579 - Froehner - - Toynbee - (several examples with close mount) ; Bronze - 61,14 g - 50,2 mm - 6 h
[NGC bronze disease] (8237652-002).
With SC on the reverse, our example is a medallion-mounted sesterce with a large ornate mounting. The green patina is homogeneous but insufficiently stabilized for NGC (not gradable). Exceptional document of the High Empire. VERY GOOD CONDITION.
The outer mount allows the Emperor to be placed in the middle of a circle, as on a Macedonian shield, and evokes the cosmos. Such mounts were also used as mirrors [Musée Saint Raimond, Toulouse]. The mount could also symbolise the celestial sphere or Helios, the sun god, with whom the Emperor constantly identified.
