Trajan Decius was acclaimed Emperor by his troops during a campaign in Mesia and Pannonia on behalf of Philip I the Arab. He had been sent to put down the revolt of the usurper Pacatian, who had proclaimed himself Emperor by his troops, but who was finally killed by them before Decius could intervene. According to Zosimus, Decius seemed reluctant to take power. However, after donning the purple, Philip I marched against Decius and the two men clashed near Verona. Decius was routed and killed. Decius' accession to the throne was subsequently recognised by the Senate, which conferred on him the name Traianus in reference to his predecessor Trajan, who during the First Dacian War (101-102) had reduced the Danube region to the status of a client kingdom, before integrating it into the Empire after the Second Dacian War (105-106).
