This extremely rare solidus commemorates the marriage of Valentinian III and Licinia, daughter of Theodosius II and Eudoxia, celebrated on 29 October 437. The imperial couple then spent the winter in Thessalonica, where these exceptional coins were minted as part of an imperial gift to mark the occasion. Only 5 examples are known, including our example, all from the same pair of corners.
