English painter (probably active around 1780-1790) Courtly scene in a castle park View of an English landscape garden. In the foreground on the left side of the picture a young noble couple with a small son lying prone in the grass, the gentleman as a hunter with a rifle and a hunting dog leaping up at him, the lady sitting on a bench and holding sheets of paper in her hands; on the right-hand side of the picture, two standing, young, distinguished ladies, to whom a boy is showing a stolen nest with young birds; in the centre and background, a large stone vase on a large, sculpturally designed pedestal, a herd of hischrudel, the castle and two neoclassical temple pavilions. Due to its monumental format, composition and motif, this large-format, atmospheric, summery, cheerful, artistically high-quality landscape probably originally served as a representative exhibition of a rural castle - as depicted here. The style, the fashion and the depiction of the English landscape garden (which first spread in Germany in Dessau-Worlitz from 1765) suggest that the painting was created around 1780-1790.
