In the spring of 1994, the 'Bleu Sang' exhibition at the Galerie Christian Desbois was an event: Enki Bilal presented a series of drawings on tracing paper and paintings, putting aside the classic comic strip and its carefully delineated rules. Although he used the main characters from the Nikopol trilogy, the idea was to do something more experimental, something totally new. This desire for a radical change of approach took shape a little later, in 1998, with the panels that make up Le Sommeil du Monstre. This was a very special period for the artist, with the war in his native Yugoslavia. Bleu Sang refers to a love story, but a turbulent story, full of wounds, that has come to an end, and the line perfectly conveys the sensuality, tensions and hesitations that characterise this relationship.
