On 3 January 1945, it relieved the 28th Infantry Division near Morhet and took up positions west of Bastogne. General George S. Patton ordered the division to capture the strategic town of Flamierge. The assault involved the 513th Parachute Regiment on the right flank, the 194th Infantry Glider Regiment on the left, while the 193rd Glider Regiment and the 507th Parachute Regiment were held in reserve against possible German counterattacks. The initial attack on Flamierge met with strong German resistance, forcing the troops to temporarily abandon the town due to enemy counterattacks.
