SET OF RELICS FROM THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO (1815) AND THE OCCUPATION OF PARIS BY FOREIGN TROOPS Comprising: - Two pieces of carved stone from the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. Inscribed in pen "A piece of Bonaparte triumphal Arch 1815". - Two buttons said to have been found on the Waterloo battlefield. One with the imperial eagle; the other bearing the number 79. - Ball from Waterloo (later gilded). On the reverse, a handwritten note dated 1 August 1834 in English from Mr Richard Smith solemnly certifying that the two pieces of marble came from the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, where Prussian soldiers were sabre-rattling and recovering these pieces of marble as relics. The buttons and the ball came from Waterloo, where the author of the attestation picked them up. "These memories are handed down to Miss Mary Lowe by her true friend. All framed under glass. With frame: 15.5 x 22.5 cm B.E. Origin : Former Napoleonic collection of the Prince's Palace of Monaco (3rd sale, lot 215) A framed set of souvenirs of Waterloo and the Occupation of Paris, comprising two sculpted stones from the Carrousel Arc of Triumph, two buttons found on the battle field, and a bullet later gilt. On the reverse, a manuscript note in English by Richard Smith certifies the authenticity of the mementos. Commentary: Richard SMITH, surgeon in Bristol. Dr Richard Smith (1772-1843) was surgeon at the Bristol Infirmary from 1796 until his death. He is known, among other things, for his anatomy of executed criminals.
