Aquarell auf genarbtem Aquarellkarton. 42 x 60,7 cm. Unter Glas gerahmt. Unten links mit Bleistift signiert und datiert 'Nay 54' - Farbfrisch erhalten, mit den typischen Alterungsspuren für die von Nay in dieser Zeit verwendeten Aquarellpapiere. Die untere linke Ecke mit winzigem Papierverlust.

Das Aquarell nimmt einen bedeutenden Platz im Schaffen von Ernst Wilhelm Nay ein. Wie selten vermag er in dieser Technik Lebendigkeit, Unabhängigkeit und Spontaneität zu vermitteln. Mit dem Aquarell, so Jean Cassou „kehrte der Künstler zu den ganz anfänglichen Bestrebungen der reinen Ursprünglichkeit zurück" (Jean Cassou, Nay-Aquarelle, Köln 1969, S. 12).
Nays musikalische Abstraktionen und Improvisationen der 1950er Jahre blenden beinahe jede Abbildhaftigkeit aus und stellen fraglos einen Höhepunkt seines reichen Schaffens dar. Unsere farbmächtige Komposition aus dem Jahr 1954 markiert eine der interessantesten Momente im Werk des Künstlers, fällt sie doch unmittelbar in den Übergang zur Phase der Scheibenbilder ab 1955. Schwarze geschwungene Linien, expressive Kräftebahnen und Tropfenketten gliedern die Komposition, während sich um sie herum jene Choreographie der Farbflächen ereignet, die im Scheibenbild in den reinen Klang der Farbe übergehen würde. Die Blicke des Betrachters verlaufen entlang der Kurven und Linien und vermitteln dabei einen fließenden Rhythmus voller tonaler Kontraste und räumlicher Offenheit zugleich.

This watercolour occupies an important place in Ernst Wilhelm Nay's oeuvre. He is able to convey vitality, independence and spontaneity to an extent that is rare in this technique. In the words of Jean Cassou, with the watercolour “the artist returned back to his very first efforts towards the purely elemental.” (Jean Cassou, Nay-Aquarelle, Cologne 1969, p. 12).
Nay's musical abstractions and improvisations of the 1950s eliminate almost every trace of representationalism, and they unquestionably represent a highlight in his rich body of work. Indeed, falling directly in the period of his transition to the phase of the disc paintings, which began in 1955, our boldly colourful composition from 1954 marks one of the most interesting moments in the artist's oeuvre. The composition is structured through sweeping black lines, expressive paths of force and chains of drips, while the choreography of the fields of colour, which would develop into a pure chromatic resonance in the disc paintings, plays out all around them. Viewers' eyes are drawn along the curves and lines, thus conveying a fluid rhythm that is simultaneously full of tonal contrasts and spatial openness.
