Lot no. 235
Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) (1892 St. Petersburg - 1990 Paris)
"Opening Night". Original title
Bronze with cold painting and partial gilding, 1990, signed, publisher's stamp "CHALK & VERMILLON AND SEVENARTS" with date and numbering 194/375 and foundry mark. For the premiere, a highly elegant, young, slender lady in an extravagant, golden-black costume with a dress falling like a train and a long fringed stole is presented on a stepped, elongated oval, stage-like plinth, which she holds up to the side in a graceful pose with a raised index finger, while her decorated head is turned into profile. The bronze sculpture is reminiscent of the sophisticated world of the 1920s, which the artist himself experienced and helped to shape, and is one of the last works by the Russian-French artist, who lived in Paris from around 1912 and became an internationally famous master of Art Deco with his decorative designs as an illustrator, stage and costume designer and fashion designer. H. 51 cm.
Cold painted and partially gilt bronze, 1990. Signed, editor's stamp by Chalk & Vermillon and Sevenarts, numbered 194/375, foundry stamp.
