FR Erwin Olaf studied journalism in Utrecht before working as an editorial photographer. His artistic work gained international recognition with his Chessmen series, for which he was awarded the Young European Photographer prize (1988). In his photography, Olaf often uses the conventions of fashion photography to create complex compositions and laconic portraits. The extreme sophistication of his descriptions and the precision of all the visual elements give his photographs an apparent serenity. This serenity conceals a subtext that evokes profoundly human and social issues: the decline of the West, societal taboos, gender politics, queer issues... and a recurring question: what is normality? EN Dutch multidisciplinary artist Erwin Olaf Springveld, studied journalism in Utrecht before working as an editorial and commercial photographer. In his art photography he often puts the conventions of fashion photography into the service of beautifully complex, often existentially terse portraiture. His emphasis is on precision in all of the visual elements that create an allure of serenity; but these highly stylised, polished depictions always have a subtext, addressing social issues, societal taboos and gender politics.
