Lot no. 30
SKIRMISH (THE). Director Georges Darien. Paris, 1893-1894. 10 issues of 8 pp. in one folio volume, cream boards, floral decoration printed in green on the first cover (Modern binding). Complete collection of illustrated issues of this superb avant-garde journal, whose existence was very short-lived. This satirical journal of anarchist tendency was directed and entirely written by Georges Darien (1862-1921), the subversive author of Biribi and Le Voleur, an anti-militarist and anarchist, who had to flee France in July 1894. The illustrations include 12 reproductions of lithographs by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who was the magazine's main contributor. The original signed and numbered lithographs were printed in an edition of 100 proofs and sold at the newspaper for 2.50 fr. Other contributors to the illustrations were Félix Vallotton, Pierre Bonnard, Louis Anquetin, Henri-Gabriel Ibels, Hermann-Paul and Alphonse Willette. Copy in excellent condition in elegant modern hardback. Without the last issue published on 16 March 1894, after an interruption of two months, in a different format and without illustrations. Tiny repair to the corner of the first three leaves, foxing on the front cover of n°4, small marginal tear to the last five leaves. Delteil, 40-51.
