ESCHYLE. Τραγωδιαι Ζ... Tragœdiæ VII. Quae cùm omnes multo quàm antea castigatiores eduntur... S.l. [Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1557. In-4, stiff vellum, double cold framing with fleurons at the corners and central medallion, smooth spine, spotted edges (17th century Dutch binding). First complete edition of Aeschylus' works in Greek, including the complete editio princeps of Agamemnon, two-thirds of which had previously been cut. The incomplete editions of Aldus, Robortel and Turnèbe were amended by Henri Estienne thanks to verses found in the Laurentian codex F. in the library of Pope Paul II by the learned Hellenist Pietro Vettori, who completed them with the help of other manuscripts with the assistance of his students Bartolomeo Barbadoro and Girolamo Maeus. A very fine Greek printing by Henri Estienne using the famous "King's Greeks", engraved by Claude Garamond on the model provided by the royal calligrapher Ange Vergèce, the matrices of which Henri Estienne took with him into exile in Geneva. A copy of the Dutch philologist and poet Cornelis de Rekenare (1562-1624), with a handwritten bookplate at the top of the title. The verses have been numbered in pen in the margins. Renouard, 116, n°15 - Schreiber, n°145 - Adams, A-265 - Brunet, I, 78.
