Lot no. 101
ESCHYLE. Τραγωδιαι ζ. Tragœdiæ vii. S.l. [Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1557. In-4, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, inner lace, gilt edges (18th century binding). First complete edition of Aeschylus' works in Greek. It contains in particular the complete editio princeps of Agamemnon, two-thirds of whose text had previously been amputated. The incomplete editions by Aldus, Robortel and Turnèbe were amended by Henri Estienne thanks to verses found in the Codex Laurentien F. in the library of Pope Paul II by the Hellenistic scholar Pietro Vettori, who completed them based on other manuscripts with the help of Bartolomeo Barbadoro and Girolamo Maeus. A very fine Greek printing by Henri Estienne using the famous "King's Greeks", engraved by Claude Garamond on the model provided by the royal calligrapher Ange Vergèce, the matrices of which Henri Estienne took with him into exile in Geneva. An elegant copy bound in the eighteenth century. One spine cracked, small worm gallery on the second board, cut at the top of a white endpaper and in the blank of the title (filled in), foxing. Renouard, 116, n°15 - Schreiber, n°145 - Adams, A-265 - Brunet, I, 78.
