The inside of the covers feature inlaid two coloured enamel plaques by Jean Goulden, representing the Meije (first cover) and bellflowers (last cover). Velvet endpapers. The binding is covered with a half morocco striped dust jacket, the whole protected by a lined slipcase (binding by Georges Cretté). First edition, illustrated with a coloured title vignette, a page with the three coats of arms of the Club Alpin Français in colour, 4 full-page engravings and 17 vignettes in the text (one of which is coloured). Private edition of only 90 copies. This is a special copy, printed on Rives but with the suite on Japon nacré. Autograph signed letter from the author to Georges Faist, editor of the Revue Alpine, published by the Lyon section of the Club Alpin Français, then chaired by Dr Siraud, who wrote the preface. Extract from the 1896 Annuaire du Club Alpin Français. The wash drawings are by Jeanès, the vignettes and lamp-ends by Libis, all wood-engraved by Georges Beltrand. Jean Goulden (Charpentry 1878 - Reims 1946) was a French doctor and artist, famous for the magnificent art deco enamels he produced in François-Louis Schmied's studio. He was responsible for plates depicting mainly landscapes, as well as decorative objects, which are highly sought-after today.
