Lot no. 1
ESTEBAN VICENTE (SPANISH-AMERICAN 1903-2001) Revere 1992 oil on canvas 71 x 122 cm (28 x 48 in.) framed dimensions: 74.5 x 125 cm (29 3/8 x 49 1/4 in.) signed dated titled on verso PROVENANCE Riva Yares Gallery, New York, NY (label on verso) Collection of Dr. Abner Delman, Santa Fe, NM, and Sarasota, FL LOT NOTES Esteban Vicente (1903–2001) was a Spanish-American painter whose work played essential role in the development of Abstract Expressionism. Born in Turégano, Spain, and trained in classical art in Madrid, Vicente moved to New York in 1936, where he became part of a vibrant and evolving American art scene. While many of his contemporaries pursued bold gestures and emotional extremes, Vicente took a more meditative approach. His paintings are known for their subtle use of color, harmony of form, and gentle luminosity. Rather than seeking dramatic expression, Vicente explored the relationships between shape, space, and hue. His compositions—often soft-edged and layered with delicate color fields—offer viewers a sense of quiet balance and inward reflection. Revere, 1992, reflects many hallmarks of his mature Abstract Expressionist style—particularly his use of color as form, atmospheric composition, and lyrical restraint. The dominant field of golden yellow sets a radiant, warm tone across the canvas, creating a sense of both light and depth. The large red-orange area to the right reads almost like a portal of energy - its slightly darker edge and smudged interior imply depth without shadow. Smaller marks - cool blue, gray, and orange—punctuate the field like whispered notes in a musical score, balancing the intense central form with rhythm and delicacy. His work bridges the gestural freedom of American abstraction with the formal discipline of European modernism. Vicente’s art is held in major institutions including MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente in Spain. ADDITIONAL NOTES Dr. Abner Joseph Delman, a distinguished cardiologist and dedicated advocate for Holocaust education, passed away at the age of 93. Born in 1930, Dr. Delman graduated from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, in 1955. He devoted his medical career to the field of cardiovascular disease, practicing in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Sarasota, Florida. Beyond his medical practice, he was known for his passion for art, his love of chocolate, and his gentle and generous nature. Dr. Delman was married for 45 years to Ilse-Lore Delman, a Holocaust survivor who spent three years in hiding during World War II. In 1998, Ilse recorded her testimony with the USC Shoah Foundation, and the couple became actively involved with the organization. Following Ilse's passing in 2018, Dr. Delman established the Dr. Abner J. and Ilse Delman Fund in memory of Ilse and her parents, Ernest and Erna Nathan. This endowment supports the Institute’s education, research, and collections programs, ensuring that stories like Ilse’s are preserved and shared with the world.
