At the beginning of the 1900s, Émile Gallé turned to lighting fixtures and achieved feats using the light that passed through his multi-layered glass to give even more life to the flora in his creations, which awoke to the softness of a lit bulb. On the strength of this success, Gallé's lighting continued to be a growing area of production, and after his death in 1904 his widow and son-in-law never stopped renewing and modernising their production to adapt to current tastes. They were inspired by the new glass techniques developed by René Lalique and his famous moulded-pressed glass, and from 1920-1925 created moulded glass vases and lamps with varying degrees of relief decoration. The beauty of multi-layered glass is revealed by the flowers, buds and foliage of blue or red rhododendrons, which take on changing colours as the bulbs are lit. These more modern creations were the last to be produced by Établissements Gallé, which continued to produce them until it closed in the mid-1930s. Today, they are highly sought-after by collectors.
